STANDARD 5.10 (ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE), strands A & B

NOTE: This test specification encompasses both strands of standard 5.10.

Macro statement:
The environment is a system of independent components affected by human activity and natural phenomena.

Knowledge statements:

  1. Naturally occurring processes affect the environment. In some cases human activities also effect the environment. (climate change, ozone production, erosion, and deposition)
  2. The environment is a system of interdependent components.
    1. Human activities impact the cycling of matter and the flow of energy through ecosystems.
    2. Humans attempt to maintain balance within an ecosystem through protection, conservation, and preservation of natural resources.
  3. Sound scientific methods are essential in determining the degree of environmental impact caused by human activity.

Skill statements for strands:
In order to demonstrate an understanding of the principles of the environment, students must use the scientific skills delineated in standards 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, and 5.4.
