WRITING SITUATION:

Walter just got a new skateboard; it is the third one he ordered from the on-line CCS catalog. Thank goodness his grandmother gave him some extra cash for his birthday. Christy has been to the day spa two times this month. She couldn't get both nails and hair done on the same day, so she had to make separate appointments. Marco just received his third Razor scooter; this will go in the garage with all of the other bikes and toys. Do kids have too much? Are children showered with too many possessions because their parents cannot say the word NO?

DIRECTIONS FOR WRITING:

A lot of parents would agree that they over-indulge their children with too many gifts or toys. These gifts are given to children for many reasons. What could be the effects that too much indulgence would have on children? Write a letter to the editor of Parents Magazine about the spoiling of American children. Speculate about the possible effects that too many gifts or treasures will have on youth. Be specific; perhaps your writing from a teen's point of view will convince parents that you have thought seriously about this issue. Support your opinion with facts, evidence, or anecdotes.
