Back Introduction to Core Curriculum Content Standards |
| In
May 1996, based on its Strategic Plan for Systemic Improvement
of Education, the State Board of Education adopted Core
Curriculum Content Standards and Cumulative Progress Indicators to form the basis of curriculum, instruction, and assessment in
New Jersey schools. These standards and indicators define the
knowledge and skills that all students are expected to acquire
by the completion of their 13-year public school education.
New Jersey's Core Curriculum Content Standards provide local school districts, parents, students, and other citizens with a clear educational direction. This competency-based system means that public-school graduates will be prepared for higher education, advanced occupational preparation, or initial employment that leads to further skill development. The Department of Education publishes Curriculum Frameworks containing activities and strategies that may assist districts in the development of local curricula aligned with the Core Curriculum Content Standards. Each district's Board of Education then determines the curriculum, selects the most appropriate materials, and designs the instructional strategies that are most appropriate for all students to achieve at competency (proficiency) or above. The Core Curriculum Content Standards are "reviewed every five years and, if necessary, further refined to ensure the quality of public school education in New Jersey. The review will provide an opportunity to assess the continuing relevance of the standards in all areas given the rapid rate of technological change in today's society. Also, the review process will provide an opportunity to assess the effectiveness of district curricula developed based on the State standards." The process of review and revision of the standards is underway. Presentation to the State Board of Education is targeted for May 2002. |
