District Level Workshops

Overview of Intensive Early Literacy (designed for principals, supervisors, coaches) – This is 1½ or 2 hours covering the key components and requirements, and discussing what administrators and coaches need to look for in classrooms and teacher instruction. The same workshop can be done for classroom teachers with at least 2 hours, preferably 2½. The difference is the focus shifts to the critical components and classroom management and structures.

Overview of L.E.A.D.S. Program – This is a 2½ hour workshop designed for principals, supervisors, curriculum committees, central office and coaches. This session focuses on the research and rationale behind the L.E.A.D.S. (Literacy is Essential to Adolescent Development and Success) program. The L.E.A.D.S. program is a three-tiered model of literacy instruction and intervention for the middle grades (grades 6-8). This session will also discuss the goals, design, and implementation of this program.
Literacy for Students in Spanish Bilingual Programs (designed for principals, supervisors, coaches) – This 2½ workshop focuses on the research supporting instruction in the native language (Spanish) and ESL literacy, pointing out briefly the differences for ELLs and why differentiated instruction is critical.
Literacy for Special Education StudentsThis is an overview of IEL (see above) with special attention paid to current SPED research and the four components of the assessment process.
ESL Reading for Non-English Language Background Students (designed for principals, supervisors, coaches) – This 2½ hour workshop focuses on instruction through ESL and ESL literacy only pointing out briefly the difficulties and challenges ELLs face in an English only environment and why differentiated instruction is critical.
Curricular Mapping and local school adaptation is intended for curriculum committees, supervisors, principals, central office – It is 1½ hours. It explores the 6 elements of a living curriculum and the need to make local decisions and adaptations at the school level.
Literacy Coach training – This is a 2 hour workshop for new literacy coaches on the best ways to work with classroom teachers.
Item Analysis for Terra NovaThis is a 1½ to 2 hour workshop based on your district results from the Terra Nova 2nd Edition Plus. This workshop trains critical staff members to look at the items that caused students difficulties and examine the different possible causes embedded in the reading process beyond the obvious stated ones from cluster analysis.
   
School and/or Classroom Workshops
Literacy for ELLs (for all audiences, but especially primary teachers) – This full day (at least 5 hours) in-depth training explores native language, ESL reading and transition to the English only program. Phonemic awareness, graphemic transfer, comprehension are all explored in depth with full audience participation.
IEL: Focus on Phonics and Vocabulary – This 2 hour workshop is designed for classroom teachers, literacy coaches, and language arts supervisors. This session focuses on the importance of phonics and vocabulary development in relation to the Intensive Early Literacy model.
ComprehensionThis is a 1½ to 2 hour workshop on going beyond the literal questions. Very hands on, interactive with the audience.
Improving Comprehension Through Strategy Instruction – This workshop is intended for classroom teachers, literacy coaches, and language arts supervisors. It is a 2 hour workshop that explores comprehension strategies that can be used before, during, and after reading. Participants will take part in demonstration lessons and will be able to take these instructional strategies back to their classrooms.
Strategies and Techniques This is a 2 hour workshop intended for primary teachers on what really works and what doesn’t.
Selection and use of classroom libraries This is a 2 to 2½ hour workshop on how to select books, why, how to use them for multipurpose and especially on connecting them to the writing process through reader response.
Word WallThis is a 1½ to 2 hour workshop on the use of Word Walls, what to include, vocabulary development and how to use them for multipurpose and how to connect them to the writing process.
The Art of Conferencing with Students – This workshop is intended for classroom teachers, literacy coaches, and language arts supervisors. It is a 1½ hour workshop that encompasses the research and rationale of conferencing with writers. Participants will learn effective techniques and practical tips to support and impact all writers in the classroom.
Journal Writing – This workshop is intended for classroom teachers, literacy coaches, and language arts supervisors. It is a 2 hour workshop that focuses on various types of journal writing and its effectiveness with all students. Participants will take part in journal writing activities and will explore the many uses of journal writing across the curriculum.
Process Writing – Intended for classroom teachers. This is usually a series of 2 to 2½ hour workshops over time. The focus is on the overview and critical components of process writing; pre-writing and 1-3-1 , revising and conferencing, and a final one on publishing.
How to organize the 90 minute block (for all audiences) – This 2 to 2½ hour workshop explores the state model for setting up the classroom, dedicating time to different components, strategies and techniques, and working with a co-teacher.
