The rubric
is an assessment tool that has been used by each of us in evaluating
performance, quality, or skills in everyday life. Whether you are
aware of it or not, when you sit down to watch a TV show, a movie,
or to eat dinner, you are using some form of a rubric. Each of these activities has different qualities that you consider important. For example, in a movie, you may look for an exciting plot, exceptional acting, or high quality special effects. Subconsciously, you rate these on a scale that you have developed. What is important to you may not be important to someone else. They may use a different rubric with different criteria. The same concept applies to assessment in a classroom. The rubric is a tool that outlines what is important to you for learning. Therefore, the first step toward developing a rubric is to define the criteria for the task. In other words, you need to set up the objectives and the related outcomes. Let's go and develop objectives based on the standards. |
