6. Is based on knowledge of adult learning and development.*

6.1 recognizes adult motivation, stages of development, personal goals and needs and levels of expertise.	NJPEP: • Standards - Standards Resource: "Share your knowledge." • Workshops - see especially the exercises in several of the workshops. • Template - for developing your own standards-based classroom activities. • Tutorials - see especially the opportunities for practice in the Helpful Hints tutorials (Test Yourself) and, in the High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA) Classroom Practice (Cluster Practice for educators).	• Stages of Developing a Teaching Portfolio (four stages). • Designing Effective Professional Development for the Implementation of Connected Mathematics Project (CMP) (four stages for middle school mathematics program).
6.2 encourages both the individual and the collaborative talents of educators.	NJPEP: • Novice Teachers_Mentors/Mentoring: Online Mentoring. NJPEP Research: 1. Online mentoring: development of units and lessons; 2001(a project with Fairleigh Dickinson University, and new and experienced teachers). 2. Targeting Standards for Student Achievement; 2003 (a project with K-8 charter schools).	• Collaborative development and storage of lesson plans in online software such as TaskStream.
6.3 applies what is known about motivation for growth and enhances positive feelings of self worth. 6.5 utilizes a variety of models and approaches, such as individually-guided staff development, observation/assessment, involvement in a development/improvement process, training, inquiry, etc.	NJPEP: • Ed Research • Tutorials • Workshops	• A National Plan for Improving Professional Development from National Staff Development Council (NSDC).

* NOTE: Hands-on workshops and information sessions provide the opportunity to introduce a topic and generate motivation and initial enthusiasm. Online resources, along with opportunities to collaborate and discuss, support additional facets of adult learning needs by enabling reflection for later application.
