Content Standards Overview - Structure

Question: Is the structure of the standards different now?
Answer:
Yes! For each content area there are the standards (numbered), and each has strands (denoted by a letter) and then Cumulative Progress Indicators (CPIs), for individual grades or small grade-level clusters. Here is a general outline of the structure and how to number each CPI of a standard.

Content Area (4. Mathematics)
|---
Standards (3. Patterns and Algebra)

|--
Grade-level (3rd grade)

|---
Strands (A. Patterns)

|---
CPIs (1. Recognize, describe, extend, and create patterns.)

The Standards' structure is easily indexed using numbers and letters, as 4.3.3.A.1. You can see how easy it is to arrive at this numbering system, and how helpful it is to include the grade-band for quick reference.

A similar indicator for the 5th grade would be 4.3.5.A.1. For kindergarten, the indicator is 4.3.K.A.1 (where K = kindergarten), or you could write it numerically as 4.3.0.A.1 (where 0 = kindergarten).
However, if you were looking at Math standard 4.5, which has similar indicators for all grade levels (though utlizing differing content), the structure could be written: 4.5.A.1. In this case, no grade needs to be indicated. But you could specify a grade (3rd grade, for instance), and write 4.5.3.A.1.

TEST YOURSELF: Using NJPEP's Standards page, find the CPIs: 3.1.4.C.1, and 5.6.6.B.1.
