The Department of Education is actively working with Public Consulting Group (PCG) to implement NJ SMART, a comprehensive data warehouse, student level data reporting, and unique statewide student identification (SID) system.  Governor Corzine, the Legislature, and Commissioner Davy have indicated that a statewide student database to support the tracking of student academic outcomes is a crucial need as well as a top priority for New Jersey.

In December 2006, all New Jersey districts were first required to submit student level data to NJ SMART.  The main goal of the submission was to establish unique student identification numbers statewide (SID). On March 21, 2007 SIDs were issued to all Districts, including Charters, via the NJ SMART portal.  Districts are now required to track, use, and manage their SIDs in addition to any local student ID that they use.  On June 2, 2008 an enhanced version of the NJ SMART portal, NJ SMART 2.0, was released and can now be accessed by the LEAs.  Some of the features in v2.0 include the ability for Districts and Charters to manage and acquire new SIDs throughout the year; an improved application look-and-feel that promotes easier navigation; and the collection of fewer data elements for the state submission data snapshot files.

The NJ SMART portal closed on October 15th for SID Management.  Further details regarding SID Management are posted on the SIDs page.

The NJ SMART portal will opened for the October 15th Snapshot Submissions on October 20th and will close on November 19th at 5pm. New data elements and modifications to existing data elements have been made to both the Core State Submission and the Special Education data submission.  Further details are posted on the State Data Submission page and updated Student Data Handbooks and file templates are posted on the Documents for Download page.
