Indicator 8: Parental Involvement – Percent of parents with a child receiving special education services who report that schools facilitated parent involvement as a means of improving services and results for children with disabilities.

Calculation: The New Jersey Department of Education is using two large scale survey instruments developed and validated by the National Center for Special Education Accountability Monitoring (NCSEAM) to collect data on how schools facilitated parental involvement. One survey is for parents of preschool children with disabilities and one survey is for parents of school age children with disabilities. Each survey consists of 25 questions designed to measure schools’ efforts to partner with parents of children with disabilities. Each year through 2011, parents of students with disabilities in one fifth of the districts in New Jersey are provided an opportunity to participate in the survey. The results of the preschool and school age surveys were combined to provide a single score for each district of the percentage of respondents who indicated that schools facilitated their involvement in their child’s program. Respondents who rated a majority of the survey items (=51%) by answering “agree”, “strongly agree” or “very strongly agree” were used as the numerator in the analysis of the survey data. The denominator was the total number of respondents. The state and district data for this indicator are expressed as a percentage to the first decimal point.
