How to Request Special Accommodations for the GED® Tests

The purpose of accommodations is to provide candidates with an opportunity to have full access to the GED test. In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, an approved New Jersey GED Testing Center must ensure that testing services are provided to candidates with disabilities in order to continue to qualify as an official GED Testing Center.

Please note accommodations are not a guarantee of improved performance or test completion. GED Testing Service provides reasonable and appropriate accommodations to individuals with documented disabilities who demonstrate a need for accommodations.
For example, GED test accommodations may include things such as:

  • An audio version of the test
  • A separate testing room
  • Extra testing time
  • Extra breaks
  • Presentation of the material in large print

Test accommodations are individualized and considered on a case-by-case basis. Consequently, no single type of accommodation (i.e., extra time) would necessarily be appropriate for all individuals with disabilities.  In addition, simply demonstrating that an individual meets diagnostic criteria for a particular disorder does not mean that the person is automatically entitled to accommodations.
Please note the following disabilities outlined by the GED Testing Service:

  • Learning and Other Cognitive Disabilities
  • Emotion/Psychological/Psychiatric Disability
  • Physical/Chronic Health Disability
  • Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

Qualified candidates with disabilities can request a special edition of the GED tests or modifications to the test administration that will help you to take the GED tests. The passing score requirements are the same for all candidates.

  • A professional, licensed in a discipline relevant to the disability, must complete and sign the forms, certifying the diagnosis and need for special accommodations or special editions of the test.
  • Supporting records on letterhead, signed by the certifying professional, must be attached to the forms.
  • Return the completed form and supporting records to the Chief Examiner at the local testing center where you plan to take the tests. The Chief Examiner reviews the application for completeness and signs the testing center section of the form.
  • The testing center forwards the form and records to the State GED Administrator for the screening review. Accommodation decisions may be made either by the State GED administrator or the GEDTS, depending on the nature of the documentation and type of request. If you disagree with the determination, you can appeal for a review by a panel of independent experts at the GED Testing Service (GEDTS), Washington D.C. If you disagree with the findings of the appeal panel, your request can be sent to the GEDTS for a final clinical case review.
