Acitng Chief Administrator

New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission

Shawn B. Sheekey is the Acting Chief Administrator of the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC). Governor Jon S. Corzine appointed him to the position in July 2009. Mr. Sheekey is the 22nd individual to lead the organization in its more than 100 years of existence. In his capacity as Acting Chief Administrator, Mr. Sheekey also serves as President of the Region 1 Board of Directors for the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA), as well as a member of its International Board.

Prior to assuming the role of Acting Chief Administrator, Mr. Sheekey served as Deputy Chief Administrator, a position he has held since July 2002. He was instrumental in the historic overhaul of motor vehicle services in New Jersey beginning with the Fix DMV initiative and the subsequent New Jersey Motor Vehicle Security & Customer Service Act of 2003. Among the many reforms Mr. Sheekey has overseen are the successful launch of New Jersey’s first state-of-the-art Digital Driver License (DDL) and 6 Point ID Verification System, introduction of comprehensive employee document fraud and customer service training and the deprivatization of more than 40 motor vehicle agencies with over 600 employees.

During his tenure with the MVC, Mr. Sheekey has helped to introduce a number of initiatives focused on enhancing the organization’s core services and improving its operations in the areas of service, security and safety. These have included the Law Enforcement Agency Security Enhancement (LEASE) program, which provides for a uniformed officer in motor vehicle agencies and professional Advisory Councils, which have created opportunities for MVC stakeholders to share valuable insight in the areas of service, safety, security and privacy, business operations, technology and finance.

In addition to his work with the MVC, Mr. Sheekey served as the Executive Director of the New Jersey Democratic State Committee. His previous service to the State of New Jersey includes a position with the Department of State where, among many responsibilities, he developed a corporate fundraising plan to increase statewide support for the New Jersey State Museum. He began his government service in 1985 as a legislative aide to State Assemblyman Dennis L. Riley of the Fourth Legislative District.

Mr. Sheekey resides in Camden County with his wife, Betty.
