DECLARACIÓN SOBRE INFORME DE UNIONES CIVILES
 

TRENTON – El Gobernador Jon S. Corzine emitió hoy la siguiente declaración sobre al primer informe de la Comisión estatal de Revisión de la ley de Union Civil en Nueva Jersey:

"En diciembre del 2006, el estado de Nueva Jersey se convirtió en sólo el tercer estado de la nación en proveer el derecho a las parejas del mismo sexo de participar en uniones civiles. Pensamos en ese momento y permanecemos firmes en nuestra convicción que estas parejas merecen los mismos derechos y beneficios que cada una de las familias en nuestro estado.

"Como resultado de la legislación, la Comisión de Revisión de la Unión Civil en Nueva Jersey fue creada con el objetivo de estudiar y analizar la efectividad del Acta de Unión Civil. Es claro a través de este primer informe, que los miembros de esta Comisión han emprendido este trabajo con total dedicación y con el compromiso de evaluar el verdadero impacto que tiene la ley de Unión Civil.

"Aunque éste no es el informe final y se esperan mas evaluaciones, el informe si incluye las preocupaciones sobre si la ley ha concedido eficazmente los mismos derechos a las parejas del mismo sexo-- que aplican a cualquier familia en Nueva Jersey.  

"Espero repasar el informe interino con mas detalle y detenidamente; y trabajar con la Comisión y la Legislatura para asegurarnos que los principios básicos de protección de igualdad bajo la ley y según  lo concede nuestra Constitución sea de beneficio a todos por igual." 

 El Gobernador Corzine firmó el acta de Unión Civil de Nueva Jersey el 21 de diciembre del 2006. El Acta concede a los individuos que se declaran en una unión civil todos los derechos concedidos a los matrimonios, incluso los derechos de visitas de hospital, la habilidad de colectar beneficios del sobreviviente y elegibilidad para deducciones en los impuestos. Los negocios públicos y privados, las organizaciones e instituciones todas tendrán que tratar a las parejas en uniones civiles de la misma manera que tratan a las personas casadas.

La legislación fue aprobada en respuesta al caso legal en New Jersey Lewis vs. Harris en Octubre del 2006. La ley creada constitucionalmente en Nueva Jersey estableció la Comisión de Revisión de la Ley de Unión Civil para evaluar la aplicación de dicha ley por un período de tres años.

STATEMENT ON CIVIL UNION REPORT

TRENTON - Governor Jon S. Corzine today issued the following statement regarding the first report of the New Jersey Civil Union Review Commission:

“In December 2006, New Jersey became only the third state in the nation to give same-sex couples the right to enter into civil unions.  We believed at the time and remain steadfast in our conviction that these couples deserve the same rights and benefits of every other family in this state.

“As a result of the bill, the New Jersey Civil Union Review Commission was created and charged with studying and analyzing the effectiveness of the Civil Union Act. It is clear that with this first report, the members of this Commission have undertaken this central task with an extreme dedication and commitment to fully evaluate the true impact of the Civil Union law. 

“Although this is not a final report and further evaluation remains, the report does raise significant concerns about whether the law has effectively granted same-sex couples the same rights and benefits of every other family in the State.  

“I look forward to reviewing the interim report in more careful detail and working with the Commission and the Legislature on ensuring that the basic principles of equal protection under the law as secured by our Constitution are afforded to everyone.” 

Governor Corzine signed the state’s Civil Union Bill on December 21, 2006.  The bill gives individuals in civil unions all of the rights granted to married couples, including the rights of hospital visitation, the ability to collect survivor benefits, and eligibility for tax deductions. Businesses, public and private employers, organizations and institutions will be required to treat civil union couples in the same manner as married persons are treated.

The legislation was approved in response to the New Jersey Supreme Court’s Lewis vs. Harris in October 2006. The bill statutorily created the New Jersey Civil Union Review Commission to evaluate the implementation of the law over a three-year period.
