Governor Signs One-Handgun-A-Month Law
In yet another move to reaffirm his commitment to reducing the number of guns on the streets, Governor Jon S. Corzine signed legislation yesterday that will limit New Jersey residents to purchasing one handgun a month.

"It is the highest responsibility of state government to maintain a safe, healthy environment where citizens can be proud and confident to raise their families, free of the threat of violence,'' said Governor Corzine. "Enacting this bill into law takes us one step closer to that day. This is not an anti-gun measure. It is an anti-violence measure.''

In signing the bill, New Jersey became the fourth state to impose a one-gun per month buying limit. The goal is to crack down on so-called straw buyers who purchase handguns legally and pass them on to criminals.

New Jersey's gun control laws are among the toughest in the nation. The bill allows New Jersey resident to purchase one gun every 30 days up to a maximum of 13 a year.
