GOVERNOR CORZINE TO ATTEND
GLOBAL WARMING CONFERENCE AT YALE

TRENTON- On Friday April 18, Governor Jon S. Corzine will attend the 2008 Conference of Governors on Global warming at Yale University in Connecticut. Governors and high level state environmental officials in attendance will discuss and debate different strategies, methods and partnerships that federal and state governments can employ to combat global warming.

Additionally, Governor Corzine and several other attending Governors will sign a global warming declaration intended to highlight the need for a partnership between state and federal government in the fight against global warming.

“My life in public service has helped me understand that it will take the courage and commitment of a core set of leaders to drive the implementation of smart, feasible, and measurable policies needed to address an issue as urgent as global warming,” Governor Corzine said. “I’m proud to join this bi-partisan group of Governors from across the nation and work together to develop partnerships and solutions.”

Previously, Governor Corzine was one of three United States Governors invited to be part of an international forum in Portugal on developing global carbon markets, considered to be just one economic based solution to help reduce global warming.

Governor Corzine established New Jersey as a national leader in reducing greenhouse gas emissions through the implementation of Executive Order 54, the Global Warming Response Act and the Global Warming Solutions Fund. The DEP is currently working with DOT, BPU, DCA and other stakeholders to draft the report that will propose the series of goals and action items necessary to meet our 2020 and 2050 targets.

The Governor also signed Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative legislation that places a carbon dioxide cap and trade system on New Jersey electricity generators.  The first auction of these carbon dioxide allowances will take place later this year.  This first mandatory market-based program to reduce carbon emissions in the U.S., will cap regional power plant carbon dioxide emissions at approximately current levels by 2009 through 2014 and reduce emissions 10 percent by 2019.
