Governor Announces Fort Monmouth Grant Extension
Trenton- Governor Jon S. Corzine today announced the U.S. Department of Labor has approved an extension to the National Emergency Grant (NEG) previously awarded to the State of New Jersey. The grant provides funding for training and the continued services of up to 1,100 Fort Monmouth employees through June 30, 2010.

"In the midst of a national recession, this is good news for New Jersey, employees and business owners in the communities in the Fort Monmouth region," said Governor Corzine.  "Today, it is even more important that states can draw on the resources of the federal government to support economic development efforts.  As a result of this extension, New Jersey will be able to maintain and retrain its high tech and highly skilled workforce to maintain the talent and the earnings of these workers during a critical time in this economic slowdown."

The New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development (LWD) requested a modification that will provide an extension to June 30, 2010 and an additional $3 million for employee training and career exploration services at the State’s dedicated Fort Monmouth Resource Center in Eatontown. The additional funding will also support the planning of a Technology Center located in the Fort Monmouth region that will make productive use of the expertise of some highly-skilled former Fort Monmouth workers and contractors who choose not to leave New Jersey when the mission is transferred.

"Keeping a core of talented workers employed in New Jersey will help our state sustain high-tech, high-wage jobs and attract more high-tech business to the Garden State," said Labor Commissioner David J. Socolow.
