POLICE STANDARDS COMMITTEE TO HOLD PUBLIC HEARING IN TRENTON
Trenton – The Governor’s Advisory Committee on Police Standards has scheduled its sixth public hearing to consider testimony on police practices in New Jersey. The hearing will take place in Trenton on September 24.
The Advisory Committee on Police Standards is a 20-member body charged with recommending whether and under what circumstances the State of New Jersey should join the U.S. Justice Department in filing a motion to terminate the federal consent decree concerning the practice of racial profiling by the New Jersey State Police. Gov. Jon S. Corzine established the Advisory Committee by executive order last August.
The Advisory Committee is also examining issues related to local law enforcement and what measures could be adopted by police departments throughout the state to eliminate instances of racial profiling.
The Advisory Committee has already held five public hearings and received both written and oral testimony. The sixth hearing in Trenton will include testimony from State Police representatives and the Independent Monitors appointed under the consent decree. Comments, proposed testimony and requests to testify may be submitted to the Advisory Committee in writing, via the Advisory Committee’s website at www.state.nj.us/acps/, or via postal mail to: Officer of the Governor/Attention: Advisory Committee on Police Standards/P.O.
