People in New Jersey blame the Jersey Devil for many things. They say the Devil has caused crops to die, has brought on droughts, has knocked off the tops of trees, and has caused water to boil. It is rumored that the Devil has also caused cows to stop giving milk and has killed livestock animals. Some people think the Jersey Devil provides a warning of war. It has been seen before almost every war since the American Revolution. It was also seen hours before Pearl Harbor was bombed in 1941.

Not everyone thinks the Jersey Devil is bad. Some people think the Jersey Devil safeguards the Pinelands by scaring away anyone who wants to destroy the land.
