On February 16, 2001, more than 700 teens came to the Liberty Science
Center in Jersey City to launch Not For Sale, the New Jersey youth anti-tobacco
advertising campaign and to declare their independence from tobacco use.
Since then, the message and movement has grown.
Every movement has a rallying cry. Not For Sale, the theme of New Jersey's
first anti-tobacco advertising campaign supports the REBEL(www.njrebel.com)
movement. The message is to choose freedom from tobacco use. They are
declaring to Big Tobacco that they are Not For Sale.
Not For Sale encompasses a variety of messages: New Jersey's youth are
smart. They know that the tobacco industry lies about its products. Knowing
the truth, they cannot be bought by advertising dollars and promotion.
Not For Sale is an expression of freedom from addiction, manipulation
and death caused by Big Tobacco.
Rebel Mission Statement
“We are a statewide, youth-led, youth-driven, anti-tobacco movement whose mission is to
reach, educate, and empower New Jersey’s youth to make healthy lifestyle decisions
and to support non-smoking norms.”
The Statewide Youth Advisory Board
The County Representative Board (CRB) is a county-wide chapter comprised of one representative from each REBEL high school chapter. These youth leaders meet bi-monthly and help to direct and guide the school chapters within each county. From each CRB, 2 representatives are elected to serve on the Statewide Youth Advisory Board (YAB). The YAB is a group of excited and motivated REBEL leaders who serve as the voice for teens all around the state. The YAB is an integral part of REBEL; they are the leaders who help guide the movement. From the Statewide YAB, the Council of Nine members are elected. The Council of Nine consists of 9 YAB members that represent 9 regions within NJ. Each Council of Nine representative serves as the liaison between his/her region’s YAB members and NJDHSS; they are the key decision makers for the YAB. Council of Nine members convene monthly on a conference call during which decisions are made, suggestions are accepted, future directions/activities are discussed, and both county and statewide recruitment and advocacy ideas are exchanged.

coordinate activities to help make ideas happen.
