Babesiosis, (Babesia sp.)
CLINICAL DESCRIPTION
Babesiosis is a potentially severe and sometimes fatal disease. The symptoms may include fever, chills, myalgia, fatigue and jaundice. Humans are infected with Babesia sp. by tick bites, and occasionally by transfusion with blood containing parasites though this would be rare in the U.S. Most infections are asymptomatic, though in asplenic or immunocompromised individuals, it can be severe. The incubation period is variable; 1 to 8 weeks has been reported.
