Cyclosporiasis,
(Cyclospora cayetanensis)
CLINICAL DESCRIPTION
A non-specific diarrheal illness caused by the protozoan, Cyclospora cayetanensis,
commonly characterized by watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, abdominal
bloating and cramping, increased flatus, nausea, fatigue, low-grade fever, and
vomiting. Diarrhea in the immunocompetent person can be prolonged (with an average
of 6 weeks) but is self-limited. In the immunocompromised person the diarrhea
can last for months. Relapses and asymptomatic infections can occur. The average
incubation period is one week, range 1 to 11 days. Transmission appears to be
primarily waterborne, however other vehicles have included raspberries, basil,
and lettuce. Direct person-to-person transmission is unlikely, because Cyclospora
oocysts are non infectious at the time of excretion.
