Listeriosis,
(Listeria monocytogenes)
CLINICAL DESCRIPTION
Infection caused by Listeria monocytogenes, which may produce any of several clinical syndromes, including stillbirth, listeriosis of the newborn, meningitis, septicemia, or localized infections. The principal reservoir of Listeria is soil, forage and water. Other reservoirs include infected domestic and wild animals. Soft cheeses may support the growth of this bacterium during ripening. Listeria tends to multiply even in refrigerated food. Outbreaks of listeriosis have been reported in association with raw milk, soft cheeses, and ready-to-eat meats including hot dogs. The organism can also be transmitted from mother to fetus in utero or during labor.The incubation period is 3 - 70 days, median 3 weeks.
