Typhoid Fever, (Salmonella typhi)
CLINICAL DESCRIPTION
An illness caused by Salmonella typhi that is characterized by insidious onset of sustained fever, headache, malaise, anorexia, relative bradycardia, constipation or diarrhea, and nonproductive cough. However, many mild and atypical infections occur. The incubation period depends on the size of the infecting dose. It may range from 3 days to one month, with the normal range of 8 to 14 days. Carriage of Salmonella typhi may be prolonged. A person is consider a chronic carrier if cultures remain positive for Salmonella typhi for one year or greater.

NOTE Serologic evidence alone is not sufficient for diagnosis. Isolates of Salmonella are to be submitted to the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Public health and Environmental Laboratories, P.O. Box 361, John Fitch Plaza, Trenton, NJ 08625-0361.
