Abstract:
This shapefile contains all psychiatric hospitals located in the state of New Jersey. Psychiatric hospitals are defined by the New Jersey Department of Health & Senior Services (NJDHSS), Division of Healthcare System Analysis as "any hospital that assures provision of comprehensive specialized diagnosis, care, treatment and rehabilitation where applicable on an in-patient basis for patients with primary psychiatric diagnoses."

This file originated as a spreadsheet prepared by the Certificate of Need Acute Care Licensure Program, NJDHSS, in 2002. The Center for Health Statistics geocoded the address fields in ArcView 8.1 using Census TIGER 2000 street files obtained from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. In November 2003, attribute information was updated using the online hospital database (<http://www.state.nj.us/health/hcsa/hospitalsearch/index.html>) maintained by the Certificate of Need and Acute Care Licensure program and the Division of Health Care Systems Analysis within the New Jersey Department of Health & Senior Services.

Purpose:
This shapefile was created in response to the need for a geographic file of New Jersey's psychiatric hospitals.

All hospitals in this file are recognized as currently licensed psychiatric facilities according to the New Jersey Department of Health Senior Services, Certificate of Need and Acute Care Licensure Program.

In 2002, the Certificate of Need and Acute Care Licensure Program, NJDHSS provided data on psychiatric hospitals as a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet to the Center for Health Statistics (Center), NJDHSS.

In 2002, the Center for Health Statistics (Center) obtained a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet of all psychiatric hospitals in the state of New Jersey from the Certificate of Need and Acute Care Licensure program, NJ Dept. of Health Senior Services. This file was converted to a dbase (*.dbf) file so that it could be imported into ArcView 8.1 and geocoded using Census TIGER 2000 street file. After geocoding, the location of each point was verified against the map and/or diving directions porvided on the respective hospital's website. All hospitals have websites which contain locational information, usually under their About Us links. When a geocoded point was not consistent with hospital maps and/or driving directions provided on the website, the website's information took precendence, and the point was manually moved to coincide with the website information as much as humanly possible.
