Abstract:
This shapefile contains all special hospitals located in the state of New Jersey. Special hospitals are defined by the New Jersey Department of Health & Senior Services (NJDHSS), Division of Healthcare System Analysis as "any hospital which assures provision of comprehensive specialized diagnosis, care, treatment and rehabilitation where applicable on an in-patient basis for one or more specific categories of patients."

This file originated as a spreadsheet, which was prepared by the Certificate of Need Acute Care Licensure Program, NJDHSS. The Center for Health Statistics geocoded the address fields in ArcView 8.1 using Census TIGER 2000 street files obtained from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. In November 2003, file was updated with information from the Department's online hospital database, <http://www.state.nj.us/health/hcsa/hospitalsearch/index.html>, which is maintained by the Certificate of Need and Acute Care Licensure program and the Division of Health Care Systems Analysis within the New Jersey Department of Health & Senior Services.

Purpose:
This shapefile was created in response to the need for a geographic file of New Jersey's special hospitals.

In 2002, the Certificate of Need and Acute Care Licensure Program, NJDHSS provided data on special hospitals as a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet to the Center for Health Statistics (Center), NJDHSS.

Process_Description:
In 2002, the Center for Health Statistics (Center), NJ Department of Health Senior Services (NJDHSS), obtained a spreadsheet of all New Jersey special hospitals from the Certificate of Need and Acute Care Licensure Program, NJDHSS. The Center geocoded the addresses listed in this file using ArcView 8.1 and Census TIGER 2000 street files.

After geocoding, the location of each point was verified using various means. When a facility address had a poor match rate or was categorized as "unmatched" by the geocoder, the facility's website was accessed to obtain driving directions and/or a map. When the facility location was not consistent with hospital maps and/or directions provided on the website, the website's information took precedence, and the point was manually moved to coincide with the website information as much as humanly possible. If a facility's website was not found, the facility address was verified by using the online mapping program, MapQuest (www.mapquest.com) and/or telephoning the facility directly and asking for location information.
