1. Heart Disease & Stroke

  2. What’s the Story?

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in New Jersey. Stroke is the third leading cause of death. There are several lifestyle choices that can help protect from heart disease and stroke including eating healthy, maintaining a healthy weight, and exercising regularly. Controlling risk factors for heart disease and stroke remains a challenge.

  3. By the Numbers

In 2010, 18,642 people in NJ died of heart disease and 3,389 people died of a stroke.

  4. Our Strategy

The New Jersey Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention (HDSP) Program works in partnership with public and private sector groups and organizations from health care, work site, and community settings to affect change. The program strives to address all points of opportunity, from prevention of heart disease and stroke in healthy persons to controlling risk factors, treatment of illness and prevention of recurrence in those who have had an event, as well as issues related to rehabilitation, long-term, and end-of-life care.

The DOH has also been partnered with the SAVE Program at UMDNJ since 2011 to implement a pilot program in the greater Newark area to improve health outcomes by increasing self-management skills among people at risk for heart disease and stroke.

The Department also launched a statewide worksite wellness program in 2012 to assist New Jersey employers with establishing policy and environmental interventions, and in creating workplace environments that reduce the risks for heart disease, stroke and obesity.

  5. Did You Know?

In New Jersey over 60% of adults are overweight or obese which is a leading contributor to heart disease and stroke.
