History of Healthy New Jersey

The first Healthy New Jersey project was Healthy New Jersey 2000: A Public Health Agenda for the 1990s .  It was launched in June, 1991 and contained 72 objectives in 11 major health categories.  Update Healthy New Jersey 2000 was published in February, 1996 and in February, 1999, Update Healthy New Jersey 2000: Second Update and Review was the first Healthy New Jersey report published online.  Both documents tracked the progress made toward the 2000 targets using data available at the time of publication.

The Department of Health’s second Healthy New Jersey initiative, Healthy New Jersey 2010: A Health Agenda for the First Decade of the New Millennium, was released in June, 2001.  The number of objectives and breadth of accompanying information had increased such that the initial document needed to be printed as a two-volume set.  Healthy New Jersey 2010 consisted of 137 objectives in 19 public health areas.  Healthy New Jersey 2010: Update 2005 was published online and in hard copy in May, 2005.  With the DOH Center for Health Statistics’ launch of the New Jersey State Health Assessment Data (NJSHAD) online data access tool in 2007, it was decided to publish all remaining updates to Healthy New Jersey 2010 objectives in health indicator reports within the NJSHAD system.  This plan allows updates to occur on a rolling basis whenever new data are available for a given objective.

Planning for the Department’s third edition of Healthy New Jersey began in 2008.  Healthy New Jersey 2020 was launched in 2013.
