New Jersey Health Statistics

  • The number of marriages in New Jersey remained stable between 1999 and 2000, while the number of divorces increased slightly (by 1.6%) (Table MD1 and Figure MD1).

  • Median ages of first-time grooms and of all brides and grooms continued to increase slowly, while the median age of first-time brides remained unchanged from 1999 (Table MD2 and Figure MD2).

  • The percentage of first-time brides and grooms who were under 25 years of age was one-third lower than the percentage ten years earlier (Table MD3 and Figure MD3).

  • In 63.3 percent of marriages, the bride was younger than the groom. The bride was older in 25.2 percent and the same age in 11.5 percent of marriages (Table MD5).

  • The percentage of brides and grooms who have never been married before has decreased slightly over the past ten years (by 2.4% and 2.6%, respectively) (Table MD6).

  • September was the most popular month for marriages in 2000. Thirteen percent of marriages occurred in September while less than four percent occurred in January (Table MD8).
