New Jersey Health Statistics


  •   The number of marriages in New Jersey in 2001 was up 10.6 percent over 2000, while the number of divorces increased 11.4 percent (Table MD1 and Figure MD1). 
  • Median ages of first-time brides and grooms decreased slightly, while the median age of all brides remained unchanged and the median age of all grooms rose marginally from 2000 (Table MD2 and Figure MD2). 
  • The percentage of first-time brides and grooms who were under 20 years of age rose substantially from 2000 (Table MD3 and Figure MD3). 
  • In 62.8 percent of marriages, the bride was younger than the groom.  The bride was older in 26.3 percent and the same age in 10.9 percent of marriages (Table MD5).
  • The percentage of brides who had never been married before continued to decrease somewhat, while the percentage of grooms never married before rose slightly (Table MD6).
  •   September and April were the most popular months for marriages in 2001.  More than 11 percent of marriages occurred in each of those two months while 4.3 percent occurred in January (Table MD8).
