The Hazardous Site Health Evaluation Program is committed to understanding the public health impacts of human exposure to hazardous substances in the environment, providing information to the public, and preventing disease by the reduction or elimination of exposures.

The Program has set these goals to accomplish its mission:

  • determine the potential for human exposure to hazardous substances from waste sites and other environmental sources; assess the likelihood of health effects from those exposures; recommend follow-up public health activities; and work with potentially affected communities during these determinations.
  • describe exposure and disease occurrence and analyze potential risk factors in populations exposed to hazardous substances in the environment, through the design and conduct of surveillance (tracking) activities, exposure and medical screening projects, or epidemiologic studies.
  • provide educational services to health care providers, individuals, local health officials, and communities concerning the prevention of exposure to hazardous substances and assessment of potential exposure-related medical conditions.
