As stated in the Act, the Department of Health and Senior Services is charged with making inspections in the following areas:
- Occupational health and environmental control;
- Medical and first aid;
- Toxic and hazardous substances;
- Respiratory protective equipment; and
- Sanitation
Industrial hygiene investigations are made in response to complaints from public employees, to referrals from other agencies, to reports of accidents and fatalities, and to target certain high risk workplaces. Inspection reports are written with detailed information on how to correct the identified health hazards.
The staff have been involved in an extensive educational effort to inform state, county and municipal agencies and employees regarding the provisions and requirements of this law. The PEOSH Program responds to approximately 1,500 telephone calls and letters received each year from employers and employees who have questions about health hazards and the law. The PEOSH Program assists employers and employees in obtaining information and providing technical assistance on occupational health hazards.
The PEOSH Program has developed numerous publications to assist employers and employees. The Program has developed information bulletins, model Programs, and health alerts on topics such as indoor firing ranges, indoor air quality, school hazards, and asbestos, among others.
Some of these publications are available on this web site; others may be obtained by calling the PEOSH Program at (609) 984-1863 or by writing to NJDHSS, PEOSH Program, PO Box 360, Trenton, NJ 08625.
The PEOSH Program has developed presentations on health hazards which commonly occur in the workplace. As new occupational health standards are adopted, seminars are developed and presented to public employers and employees to help them better understand and implement the requirements of these standards. The PEOSH Program can develop additional educational seminars in response to specific requests.
