Heart Attack (Acute Myocardial Infarction)Heart attacks are one of the leading causes of death for both men and women all over the world. Important risk factors for heart attack include: cardiovascular disease (such as a previous heart attack or stroke); older age (especially men over 40 and women over 50); tobacco smoking; high blood levels of certain lipids (triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein or "bad cholesterol") and low high-density lipoprotein (HDL, "good cholesterol"); diabetes; high blood pressure; obesity; chronic kidney disease; heart failure; excessive alcohol consumption; abuse of certain drugs (such as cocaine); and chronic high stress levels.

Recently, scientists have found that air pollution, particularly fine particulate matter, can increase the risk of heart attacks.

The New Jersey Department of Health’ Office of Health Care Quality Assessment has prepared The New Jersey Hospital Performance Report to provide information on hospital quality to patients, their families, and health care professionals.  This report includes information on heart attack survival and other important health outcomes.
