Parental Objections

The law requires that all newborns have their hearing screened before discharge from the hospital except when a parent or guardian objects to having the screening done based upon bona fide religious tenets or practices. The parent’s written objection (a signed statement) must be filed in the permanent medical record, and the refusal must be reported to the New Jersey State Department of Health, Special Child, Adult and Early Intervention Services.
