Sickle Cell Disease is a common and often life-threatening disease. It is an inherited disease which is passed from parents to their children, occurring in approximately 1 in every 400 African-American infants. Individuals of Mediterranean , Arabian, Caribbean , South and Central American and East Indian ancestry can also be affected.
The management of Sickle Cell Disease over the past several decades has primarily been directed toward the prevention and treatment of complications. Improved medical care has allowed 85% of children with Sickle Cell Anemia to survive to the age of 20.
Programs now exist throughout the state addressing the unique health care needs of both children and adults with the Sickle Cell Diseases and other hemoglobinopathies.
