School districts throughout New Jersey are forced to make budget cuts, and transportation particularly courtesy busing, is usually targeted.  This new resource from New Jersey Safe Routes to School provides strategies to help with planning so students can safely walk and bike to school when busing is eliminated or reduced.

School policies trending toward health

New data from the 2012 School Health Policies and Practices survey finds that more school districts in the U.S. have policies that promote student health. For example, in 2012, 43.4% of districts had policies that required schools to prohibit offering junk food in vending machines.

National Rates of Obesity Hold Steady

New data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention find that about 35% (34.9%) of US adults were obese in 2011-2012. This about the same as in 2009-2010 (35.7%). Obesity rates continue to vary, however, between racial/ethnic groups and between age groups.

ShapingNJ Community Grantees Make their Communities Healthier

Three out of four community grantees successfully worked to change policies to make healthy food and physical activity more accessible. More than two-thirds of grantees successfully made progress in changing the environment to make healthy food and physical activity more accessible.

Edible Jersey and the New Jersey Farm to School Network awarded William J. McGinn Elementary School of Scotch Plains the 2013 NJ School Garden of the Year Award. Schools from across the state entered the contest and submitted examples of how their schools creatively use their school gardens to promote better nutrition, environmental education and community involvement.

Results from the 2013 ShapingNJ Partnership Assessment indicate that 64% of partners are working to make the healthy choice the easy choice by implementing ShapingNJ activities. The majority find ShapingNJ to be beneficial to their organization's work.

ShapingNJ is on Track to Meet its Goals

A new update reports ShapingNJ's progress on its goals and objectives. The update finds that ShapingNJ is on track to meet or exceed the majority of its goals and objectives for 2015 and 2020. More progress is being documented around physical activity than nutrition.
