Maternal Medications While Breastfeeding

WIC Logo

Most prescription and over the counter medications are considered safe while breastfeeding. However, there are some medications that are not recommended for use while breastfeeding.

It is important to discuss the safety of any medication you might use while breastfeeding with your baby's healthcare provider.

The American Academy of Pediatrics Policy Statement
"The Transfer of Drugs and Other Chemicals into Human Milk"

includes a comprehensive list of maternal medications and their affect on the breastfeeding infant and can be used as a resource for you to discuss with your family’s healthcare providers.
