All New Jersey hospitals operating a cardiac cathererization laboratory are required to provide patient level data on their diagnostic and interventional cardiac catherization procedures.
Currently there are various state licensure categories applying to cardiac catheterization laboratories:
- Low Risk labs may perform diagnostic catherizations only, and only on low risk patients, as defined in the regulatory standards
- Full Service Diagnostic labs may perform diagnostic catheterizations only, but on any stable patient
- Primary Angioplasty Centers may perform any diagnostic procedures, and may also perform an emergency PCI, to open up a blocked coronary artery on patients having heart attacks
- Cath Labs in Cardiac Surgery Centers may perform any diagnostic or interventional catheterization procedures on any patients
- In addition, nine primary angioplasty centers are participating in an Elective Angioplasty Demonstration Project.
At present, there are three separate registries. In 2007, the department will introduce a unified registry, and hospitals will fill out only those portions of the data collection form that pertains to their type of cath lab.
