Asbestos Training and Certification Information

Any training agencies who wish to conduct New Jersey asbestos abatement training for workers and supervisors must be certified by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS).

Asbestos abatement Workers and Supervisors must be trained by a DHSS approved training provider, pass a third party State examination and apply to the NJ Department of Labor and Workplace Development(DOLWD).

To conduct asbestos abatement in NJ, firms must be licensed by the DOLWD.

Become a NJ Certified Asbestos Training Provider

For information on becoming certified, refer to our Asbestos Training Provider, Initial Application Package


Instructor approval (must be a currently certified NJ Training Provider or be applying for certification) 

NJ certified Asbestos Training Providers who wish to have an instructor to teach a NJ course, must submit an "Application for Approval as an Asbestos Training Course Instructor" [pdf 29k] to the DHSS.


Renew an existing NJ Asbestos Training Provider Certification    

NJ Asbestos Training Provider certifications are valid for one year. Training Providers must submit an "Asbestos Training Provider, Renewal Application" [pdf 63k] at least 30 days prior to the expiration.

Reciprocity in NJ

All individuals seeking reciprocity for a NJ worker or supervisor permit must first submit an "Application for Reciprocal Asbestos Accreditation" [pdf 15k] to the DHSS. The DHSS will review the applicant’s training and permit status from another USEPA authorized state. Upon approval, the applicant must take the NJ state asbestos examination.  Once the applicant has successfully passed the examination, they may apply to the DOLWD for an asbestos permit.

Taking the State Asbestos Examination

All individuals who wish to acquire a NJ asbestos worker or supervisor permit must first pass a state examination.  For more information on how to take this examination, please refer to the "Asbestos Examination Candidate Information Bulletin" [pdf 74k]. This bulletin provides exam candidates with the information necessary to schedule and take the examination.

Becoming a NJ Certified Asbestos Safety Control Monitoring (ASCM) Firm or an Asbestos Safety Technician (AST)

The New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA) licenses Asbestos Safety Control Monitoring Firms (ASCMs) and Asbestos Safety Technicians (ASTs).  For more information on how to contact DCA, please refer to Indoor Environments Contacts.  


Become a NJ Certified Asbestos Abatement Contractor or Apply for an Asbestos Worker or Supervisor Permit

Asbestos abatement companies are licensed by the DOLWD.  In addition, all asbestos abatement workers and supervisors are permitted by the DOLWD. For information on how to contact the DOLWD, please refer to the Indoor Environments Contacts page.
