A license is required for any person who is employed by any local health agency in New Jersey as a Health Officer or Registered Environmental Health Specialist. The rules adopted as Licensure of Persons for Public Health Positions, N.J.A.C. 8:7 sets forth reasonable standards for the licensing of Health Officers and Registered Environmental Health Specialists in New Jersey. These rules were most recently readopted on October 16, 2006.
The Department of Health , through the Pubic Health Licensing and Examination Board (Board), grants licenses to those candidates who submit evidence of the required education, training and experience, are accepted for testing by the Board, and subsequently pass an examination for the position. The examination is administered two times per year -- May and November.
Applications and all supporting materials are due approximately a month and one-half before the scheduled examination date. This allows time for administrative processing and the review by the Board.
| Additional information or an application for the Registered Environmental Health Specialist or Health Officer examination is available by contacting the Licensure, Compliance and Enforcement Program at 609-292-4993. |
