Immunizations Reporting

The New Jersey Immunization Information System (NJIIS) is capable of receiving electronic immunization messages on behalf of The New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH). The NJIIS is the official repository of immunizations administered to individuals in the state of New Jersey.

NJDOH is encouraging providers and hospitals to send immunization data to meet their MU obligation and also help providers and hospitals fulfill the New Jersey Immunization registry mandate per NJAC 8:57 - 3.16a, that went into effect on January 1, 2012. All providers who administer vaccine to New Jersey children seven years of age and younger are required to report the doses administered into the NJIIS within 30 days of administering the vaccine.

Meaningful Use

NJIIS accepts immunization data in the HL7 2.5.1* message formats. To meet Meaningful Use, submission of immunization information will need to be sent from a Certified EHR Technology (CEHRT), in the correct HL7 format, and conform to NJIIS technical specifications. See the message format table below.

*  Providers who have already achieved ongoing submission of Immunization information in HL7 2.3.1 for Stage 1, may continue to send in that format when they attest for Modified Stage 2

How To Get Started

Information regarding the registration, testing, onboarding, and transmission of Immunization data can be found on the NJ Immunization Information System website. Before you begin, please read through the getting started guide for information on how to send Immunization data using the NJIIS Interface Management System (IMS).

FAQs

  1. My practice already has established an interface with NJIIS in the HL7 2.3.1 format. Do I have to establish a new interface to meet the MU Stage 2 requirement for HL7 2.5.1 format?

No. Providers who have already achieved ongoing submission of immunization information in HL7 2.3.1 for MU Stage 1 may continue to send immunization data to NJIIS in this format when they attest for MU Stage 2.
  2. How do I find out if my EHR vendor has an interface with NJIIS?

If an EHR vendor has tested successfully with NJIIS, it will be listed under the Vendor Name drop-down list on the Interface Enrollment Request Form. Each practice site is required to submit a test file for Meaningful Use Stage 1, and pursue establishment of an interface for ongoing submission with NJIIS for Meaningful Use Stage 2, regardless of whether the EHR vendor has other clients that have existing interfaces with NJIIS.
