Four medical students have completed a unique internship sponsored by the Department of Health and Senior Services that emphasizes the caring side of health care to the next generation of healthcare professionals.

 

Completing the third session of the DHSS Humanism in Medicine Internship are Samir Jani of Philadelphia, a student at Drexel College of Medicine in Philadelphia; Jignaben Patel of North Bergen and Nishant Patel of Edison, both students at St. George's School of Medicine in Grenada; and Andrei Moroz of Philadelphia, who attends Temple University School of Medicine.

 

The medical students will make their final presentations to the Department on Thursday, Dec. 20, at 11 a.m. in the DHSS Health and Agriculture Building.

 

DHSS Commissioner Fred M. Jacobs, M.D., J.D. praised the students and the 10-week internship.

 

 “They have had the opportunity to deepen their perspective of the human side of patient care,” Dr. Jacobs said.  “The program offers specialized training in a variety of subject areas, and direct experience in health care delivery at several clinical sites in New Jersey.”

 

The students attended workshops and seminars with distinguished faculty on topics that include ethics, health policy, the public health system, health care disparities and cultural competency.

 

“This is a scholarly pursuit that will have a lasting and positive impact on their approach to patient care,” Dr. Jacobs said.  “Ultimately we all benefit from physicians who understand the humanistic side of medicine.”

 

Since the program’s inception, 12 medical students have been trained through this internship.
