Department of Health and Senior Services to hold Final Pandemic Influenza Workshop Session

The New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services will hold the final session of its statewide Influenza Pandemic Preparedness Summit on Tuesday, Sept. 29, at the New Brunswick Hyatt Regency.

More than 250 health officials, community partners and emergency responders are expected to attend the fifth workshop of the summit.

At the final session, Commissioner Heather Howard, Deputy Commissioner Dr. Susan Walsh and Senior Assistant Commissioner David Gruber will provide updates of state planning for H1N1 influenza.

In addition, the Department will present its newly launched public awareness campaign that is currently underway statewide. The campaign features television and radio Public Services Announcements in English and Spanish; a bus advertising campaign in conjunction with the CDC and a community education program.

There will also be two panels. The morning panel features New Jersey journalists and nationally recognized risk communication expert Dr. Vincent Covello on how the media receives information during emergencies. The afternoon panel will discuss the importance of community and faith-based organizations in preparing for a responding to public health emergencies.

As part of the summit, The Department held two sessions each in July and August to continue pandemic influenza planning strategies on both state and local levels.
