Departments of Health and Agriculture to Host First Lab Career Day

--To Promote Public Health, Agriculture and Clinical Research Opportunities --

More than 50 New Jersey high school and college students will be attending a day-long career day at the Public Health, Environmental and Agricultural Laboratories building in West Trenton on Friday, May 2.

Students from Rutgers University, Rider University, Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, Middlesex County College, Camden County College, Cumberland County Academy, Middlesex County Academy and Millville High School are scheduled to attend. Students will hear a panel discussion from scientists in the public health, agricultural and clinical research fields, tour the state-of-the-art laboratory and discuss career opportunities with staff from the Departments of Health and Agriculture.

"Public health laboratorians are on the front lines protecting the public from emerging infectious diseases, foodborne illness outbreaks, agents of bioterrorism and environmental contaminants," said Health Commissioner Mary E. O'Dowd. "Careers in this field can be very rewarding. This career day will offer a wide range of options for students who may have not considered a career in public health laboratory science."

"Our animal and plant laboratories have an important mission in identifying and preventing disease outbreaks that would impact our food supply, public health, and the horticultural industry," said Secretary of Agriculture Douglas H. Fisher.  "We welcome the students to see the wide variety of careers available to them in agriculture.  There are many job opportunities in this field for energetic and bright people."
