Acting
Commissioner Dr. George T. DiFerdinando, Jr. issued today a statement
regarding the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) environmental
samples of the West Trenton postal facility in Ewing Township that
were originally reported as preliminary negative on October 21 by
the Department of Health and Senior Services:
"The
approximate 20 FBI environmental samples for the West Trenton facility
were sent to United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious
Disease (USAMRID) in Maryland and are being analyzed there. These
results are expected in the near future. The 20 out of 20 samples,
which were reported negative for anthrax, were from the Route 130
Mail Processing Facility in Hamilton Township - not the West Trenton
facility as previously reported.
"The
Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) and Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) conducted additional environmental
sampling of the entire facility yesterday [October 25] - with results
from these samples pending.
"As soon as we have any updated results on these samples, we
will make them public.
"Like
the Hamilton Township facility, however, the West Trenton facility
remains closed and all postal employees and business visitors are
receiving antibiotic treatment," said Dr. DiFerdinando.
