Acting Commissioner Lacy Statement on Federal Funds
for Public Health Infrastructure in New Jersey

TRENTON - Health and Senior Services Acting Commissioner Clifton R. Lacy, M.D. today issued the following statement on the distribution of a $26.9 million federal grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to strengthen New Jersey's public health infrastructure for bioterrorism preparedness:

"Enhancing the safety of New Jersey's citizens and confronting the new security challenges that face this state is a top priority for the McGreevey Administration. This funding is critical as we continue to work toward a comprehensive plan that puts our families and their security first.

"At the direction of Governor James E. McGreevey, I will be developing the statewide plan that is required by the federal government to obtain the funding to augment the state's public health infrastructure.

"New Jersey already is working aggressively to combat terrorism with the establishment of the Office of Counter-Terrorism and with the Governor's appointment of Kathryn Flicker as Assistant Attorney General for Counter-Terrorism and the development of an innovative counter-terrorism training program that improves coordination between law enforcement agencies at every level. This grant will enable us to continue to move forward in our efforts to enhance safety and security for New Jersey families."
