Memorial Hospital of Salem County Resumes Admissions, Surgical Procedures

TRENTON - Following a re-inspection of Memorial Hospital of Salem County this afternoon, the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services has lifted all restrictions placed on the hospital yesterday. As a result, the hospital may now resume admissions and non-emergency surgical procedures for both inpatients and outpatients.

"The Department of Health and Senior Services takes very seriously its mission of assuring patient access to safe and high-quality health care," said Acting Commissioner Clifton R. Lacy, M.D. "After this morning's meeting with hospital leadership and Assemblyman John Burzichelli at which we reviewed the facility's remediation plan - and then following a successful re-inspection today - we are satisfied with the hospital's comprehensive efforts to correct the problems."

Admissions to the facility were halted yesterday as a result of deficiencies found during department inspections conducted from February 19 to 21, and a revisit survey conducted on February 26, 2002. Admissions were curtailed as a pro-active measure to allow the hospital to immediately address identified problem areas. The hospital was able today to demonstrate to the department's satisfaction that the deficiencies have been substantially corrected.

The department will continue to work with the hospital to ensure that all deficiencies found during recent inspections are rectified.
