TRENTON - With the summer in full swing, Governor James E. McGreevey
today urged New Jersey residents to donate blood to help relieve
a critical blood shortage in the area's blood banks.
"Every
unit of blood donated can help save the lives of four or five people,"
McGreevey said. "Please make time this summer to donate blood,
and consider becoming a regular donor throughout the year."
A
five-day supply of blood is considered adequate. Blood centers serving
New Jersey report there is currently only a two-day supply of most
blood types and less than a one-day supply of type O blood. Type
O blood is the most common type, and can also be given safely to
persons with other blood types. It is frequently used in emergencies
when there is not time to determine a patient's blood type.
The
nation's ongoing blood shortage worsens during holidays when people
are busy with other activities. Historically, donation markedly
decreases in the summer around the July Fourth holiday.
"We
must have a safe and available blood supply, both for New Jersey's
continuing health needs and to draw upon in times of emergency,"
said Health and Senior Services Commissioner Clifton R. Lacy, M.D.
"Please help restore and maintain this supply by donating now
and regularly."
Most
healthy individuals at least 17 years old, and who weigh 110 pounds
or more, are eligible to give blood. Donors may give blood every
two months. Seventeen-year-olds currently need parental consent
to donate.
To
schedule a donation, please call one of the blood centers listed
below. The centers have evening and weekend hours and also schedule
collections at blood mobiles at various sites.
