The nation's health care system is undergoing a transformation in an effort to improve safety, quality, and efficiency of care. There are numerous projects and initiatives related to this modernization effort, ranging from the implementation of ICD-10 to health care information exchange projects.
Under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, a number of provisions associated with the adoption and use of certified electronic health record technology have been established.
These programs will:
- Reduce medical errors;
- Improve health care outcomes;
- Ensure quality; and
- Reduce health care costs.
David Blumenthal, MD, MPP, the former National Coordinator for Health Information Technology under President Barack Obama, explains this in more detail in his article "The "Meaningful Use" Regulation for Electronic Health Records" published in the New England Journal of Medicine in July, 2010.
