The nation’s health care system is undergoing a transformation in an effort to improve safety, quality, and efficiency of care. There are numerous projects and initiatives related to this modernization effort, ranging from the implementation of ICD-10 to health information exchange projects.
Under the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, a number of provisions associated with the adoption and meaningful use of certified electronic health record (EHR) technology have been established.
These programs are expected to achieve the following outcomes:
· Reduce medical errors;
· Improve health care outcomes;
· Ensure quality; and
· Reduce health care costs.
Additional information on the benefits of EHR may be located on the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology's (ONC) HealhtIT.gov webpage or the CMS EHR Incentive Programs webpage.
