Remember, there is no substitute for blood.  Blood cannot be manufactured.

A continuous supply of blood is needed at all times throughout the year.  It is in constant demand for treatment of injuries, cancer, hemophilia, and for use during surgery.

To give blood, you must:

  • be in good health
  • be at least 16 years old
  • weigh at least 110 pounds

Being in good health means feeling well and being able to perform normal activities.  For people with a chronic condition such as high blood pressure or diabetes, being in good health also means that they are receiving treatment and the condition is under control.

Healthy individuals over 75 must have written permission from their physician dated within two weeks of their donation.

People can safely give red blood cell donations up to five times a year, or once every 56 days.  Double red cell donations can be made once every 112 days.

What’s it Like to Donate?  Here Are the Four Steps to Donating Blood.

  1. Registration – Provide your name and identification and complete the forms or questionnaires provided at the reception table.
  1. Confidential Health Screening – Donors go through a screening process to assure they are healthy and eligible to donate.  This entails a brief exam to take your health history, temperature, pulse, blood pressure and blood count conducted by a certified healthcare professional.
  1. The Blood Donation – It takes 5-10 minutes.
  1. Refreshments – Rest and enjoy cookies, fruit and juice to replenish the sugar and fluids in your body.

The entire process from registration to refreshments takes about an hour.  It is safe and easy.  It’s one of the most important things you can do in the course of a normal day.
