Exposing Diverse Students to oral Health Professions [pdf 2mb]
Dental Tool Kit

Exposing Diverse Students to Oral Health ProfessionsThe Office of Minority and Multicultural Health is pleased to provide Career Exploration: Exposing Diverse Students to Oral Health Professions, a tool kit designed to help anyone who works with students to encourage them to pursue careers in oral health. With this tool kit, we hope to specifically inspire underrepresented minority students who may not have role models in dentistry who resemble themselves to realize that they too can become dentists, dental hygienists or dental assistants.

The purpose of this tool kit resource is to attract qualified high school students into learning more about careers in the oral health profession. This tool kit contains information that will help you arrange to have an oral health professional visit your school, provide facts about oral health careers, and outline various resources you can discuss with your students and their parents to get them on the path to dentistry.

Community Roundtable Discussion report [pdf 435kb]

The Department of Health and Senior Services recognizes the importance of community input in discussing issues around health disparities and policies that will improve the status of health in our communities. To that end, the Office of Minority and Multicultural Health hosted community roundtables to identify what the community viewed as barriers to living healthy lives and to understand what the community believes is needed to overcome those barriers. These “town-hall” style meetings were held in Newark and Atlantic City.

The community roundtables report tells us that the top areas of concern include:

  • Increasing support to hospitals that care for the poor and medically underserved
  • Passing legislation concerning affordable and accessible health care
  • Allowing fitness programs in public schools
  • Increasing access to nutritional foods through neighborhood grocery stores

The community roundtables gave the Department an opportunity to receive feedback from the public and find out what the concerns are and what the solutions might be.

In early 2008, PBS aired a documentary, Unnatural Causes: Is Inequality Making Us Sick? It explores how health and longevity are correlated with socioeconomic status, how people of color face an additional burden and how solutions lie not in more pills or better genes, but in fairer social policies. Check the PBS website for information on how you can get a copy of this program on DVD.

The American Stroke Association announces its Power to End Stroke campaign

Every year about 700,000 people in the United States suffer a stroke, resulting in nearly 158,000 deaths. There is a tremendous disparity regarding the incidence of stroke in New Jersey and across our country. Overall, stroke is the number three killer in America, however, African-Americans have almost twice the risk of first-ever stroke as do Caucasians. Age-adjusted death rates for stroke are higher in blacks than whites. For most typical strokes, the window of opportunity for acute treatment is less than three hours. However, it takes the average person up to six hours to recognize that a stroke is occurring. Stroke is also an overwhelming economic issue--the estimated direct and indirect cost for stroke in 2005 was $56.8 billion. The Power To End Stroke campaign seeks to create awareness of this devastating illness and the disparity that exists between those who are affected.

Power to End Stroke intends to deliver the power of education, the power of knowledge, and the power of prevention to the African-American community.
