2008 Commission Meeting
|
The New Jersey Commission on Higher Education convened at the Mary
G. Roebling Building in Trenton on May 23, 2008. Chairman Laurence
Downes presided. Highlights from the meeting include:

Chairman’s Report: Mr. Downes commented on SCI follow
up questions that were emailed to the senior public institutions
and
that the
Commission would like to receive the responses as quickly
as possible.

Executive Director’s Report: Ms. Oates
commented on the proposed budget and discussions around restoration,
TAG, income
limit on
NJ STARS, another 10% cut, and no cut for EOF. She also
commented on
a grant applied for with the Corporation for National and
Community Service called Learn and Serve America Social Media
Initiative,
the Camden college fair, and forming a task force on NJ
STARS with the
Legislature.

Presidents’ Council Report: Dr. Yaw stated that they
met with the chairs of the Senate and Assembly Budget Committees,
the
transfer
agreement will be in effect in September but they are still
waiting to resolve the appeals process, they met with the board
of directors
of NJEdge.net, and they are revising their bylaws and dues
structure.

Report on New Innovation Partnership Institutes: Finance and Research
Director Betsy Garlatti reported on the competitive grant
process for the Innovation Partnership Institutes. She stated that the
applications are still under review, all sectors are represented, and the
second round winners will be announced at the next meeting.

Adoption of Meeting Schedule for Fiscal 2009: The Commissioners unanimously
adopted a resolution approving the 2008-09 meeting schedule
for the Commission.

Adoption of Institutional Profile Form and Content: The Commissioners
unanimously adopted a resolution approving the proposed Form
and Content of the Fall 2008 Institutional Profile Reports.

Montclair State University Exceeding Mission to Offer
the Ph.D. in Counselor Education: The Commissioners unanimously adopted
a resolution authorizing Montclair State University to offer the Doctor of Philosophy
in Counselor Education.

EOF Update: EOF
Executive Director Glenn Lang commented on the
Camden college fair and two training sessions
coming up
in June.

Old Business: The Commissioners unanimously adopted a resolution
electing the chairman, vice chairman, and four members of the Executive
Committee of the Commission to two-year terms beginning in July
2008. Also, individuals representing colleges and a union member
participated in a discussion of two proposed rules of the licensure
regulations: mandatory SURE participation and proportion of instruction
provided by full-time faculty.

Comments from the Public: Ms. Kathy Malachowski, President, Association
of NJ County College Faculty, introduced herself, commented on
her hopes as new president, and gave her background as a faculty
member at Ocean County College; Ms. Quaneisha Williams, student
from Hudson County Community College, commented on her support
of and success from the Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) program;
Ms. Kiesha Fludd, student from Hudson County Community College,
commented on the great staff and counseling from the EOF program.
Next Meeting: June 27, 2008, at 10:00 a.m., at the Mary G.
